Mass of the Archangels

Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.

Mass team: Four Archangel-Priests, two Deacons, one Priestess

Temple: Four columns at the four directions, and one small bench Altar in the center. Two small tables are to the NW and SE.

The Eastern column has a white cloth and a white feather beside unlit incense. The Southern column has a red cloth and a burning red candle. The Western column has a blue cloth and a chalice of water. The Northern column has a dark green cloth and a dish of salt. The center altar has a gold cloth. The two small tables have purple cloths. One has a censer and the other an small (empty) blue glass bowl.

The Deacons are robed in black, with silver sashes. Each carries a sword and a staff.

The Opening

The SE Deacon: Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law!

The NW Deacon: I proclaim the law of light, life, love and liberty in the Name of

Both: IAO

Congregation: Love is the Law, Love under Will.

Music. The Priestess enters.

The Congregation gives the Hailing sign of the magician.

She is garbed with a mantle of seven sheer veils of yellow, red, blue, green, silver, gold, and violet. Underneath the last veil she is nude, or (if in barbarous realms) dressed in a simple white tunic. She carries the cup and paten with the Host.

The Priestess: Greetings of the earth, the stars, and the heavens.

The Priestess places the paten and cup upon the altar and stands, facing East.

SE Deacon: Hail and Enter, Guardian of the East!

All give the hailing sign.

Raphael enters and moves to stand in the East, slightly to the right of the column and facing the Center altar. He is robed in white.

Priestess: Dost thou aspire to the duties of the Priest of the Sun in the East?

Raphael: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Priestess: Accepted.

She moves to stand before him and, picking up the feather, makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Element of Air.

She takes the staff from the Deacon and makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Physician and Healer.

She hands him the staff, and removes the uppermost (yellow) veil from herself.

Priestess: By the power within me, which is the power of All, I name thee Priest Raphael, Archangel, Guardian of the East!

She places the veil over him and draws the Pentagram of Air before him; the Congregation also draws an invoking pentagram of Air to the East.

All (vibrating name): YHVH

Raphael takes the staff and moves to stand in the East. Facing outward, he draws the invoking pentagram of Air and vibrates IAO across the congregation and temple while making a slow doesil circle. He moves to stand behind the column, facing inward.

The Priestess returns to stand before the Center altar, facing South.

NW Deacon: Hail and Enter, Guardian of the South!

All give the hailing sign.

Michael enters and moves to stand in the South, slightly to the right of the column and facing the Center altar. He is robed in white.

Priestess: Dost thou aspire to the duties of the Priest of the Sun in the South?

Michael: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Priestess: Accepted.

She moves to stand before him and, picking up the candle, makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Element of Fire.

She takes the sword from the Deacon and makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Warrior and Protector.

She hands him the sword, and removes the uppermost (red) veil.

Priestess: By the power within me, which is the power of All, I name thee Priest Michael, Archangel, Guardian of the South!

She places the veil over him and draws the invoking Pentagram of Fire before him; the Congregation also draws an invoking pentagram of Fire to the South.

All (vibrating name): ELOHIM

Michael takes the sword and moves to stand in the South. Facing outward, he draws the invoking pentagram of Fire and vibrates IAO across the congregation and temple while making a slow doesil circle. He moves to stand behind the column, facing inward.

The Priestess returns to stand before the Center altar, facing west.

Gabriel enters and moves to stand in the West, slightly to the right of the column and facing the Center altar. He is robed in white.

Priestess: Dost thou aspire to the duties of the priest of the Sun in the West?

Gabriel: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Priestess: Accepted.

She moves to stand before him and, picking up the cup, makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Element of Water.

She takes the staff from the Deacon and makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Scribe and Herald.

She hands him the staff, and removes the uppermost (blue) veil.

Priestess: By the power within me, which is the power of All, I name thee Priest Gabriel, Archangel, Guardian of the West!

She places the veil over him and draws the invoking Pentagram of Water before him; the Congregation also draws an invoking pentagram of Water to the West.

All (vibrating name): SHADDDAI

Gabriel takes the staff and moves to stand in the West. Facing outward, he draws the invoking pentagram of Water and vibrates IAO across the congregation and temple while making a slow doesil circle. He moves to stand behind the column, facing inward.

The Priestess returns to stand before the Center altar, facing North.

Uriel enters and moves to stand in the North, slightly to the right of the column and facing the Center altar. He is robed in white.

Priestess: Dost thou aspire to the duties of the Priest of the Sun in the North?

Uriel: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Priestess: Accepted.

She moves to stand before him and, picking up the salt, makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Element of Earth.

She takes the sword from the Deacon and makes three crosses.

Priestess: Be thou the Guide and Keeper of the Gate.

She hands him the sword, and removes the uppermost (green) veil.

Priestess: By the power within me, which is the power of All, I name thee Priest Uriel, Archangel, Guardian of the North!

She places the veil over him and draws the invoking Pentagram of Earth before him; the Congregation also draws an invoking pentagram of Earth to the North.

All (vibrating name): ADONAI

Uriel takes the staff and moves to stand in the North. Facing outward, he draws the invoking pentagram of Earth and vibrates ADONAI across the congregation and temple while making a slow doesil circle. He moves to stand behind the column, facing inward.

The Priestess returns to the Center, facing East.

Priestess: Fire of spirit, glory of light, star of joy, static and fixed thou art not. As the circuit of the sun, so also the circuit of the life upon earth. As birth to maturity, maturity to wisdom, and wisdom to realms unknown, in the name of IAO…I say to thee, Begin upon thy Journey!

The Dance of the Elements

Music. The Priestess moves towards the East and, touching Raphael lightly upon the breast, turns and moves to circle the center altar doesil as Raphael moves towards the South. The Priestess then moves to Michael and touches him lightly on the breast. He moves with Raphael to the West as she returns to circle the center altar widdershins. The Priestess moves to the West and touches Gabriel lightly upon the breast. As Gabriel, Michael and Raphael move to the North, she circles the altar doesil. As the other three reach Uriel, they hand their staff or sword to a deacon, then remove their veils and place them over Uriel in order (Gabriel, Michael, Raphael), then enter the tomb and kneel. Uriel closes the tomb and moves to stand before it. The Priestess has moved to the center, facing East.

During the following, the Priestess turns slowly in a circle, doesil, ending facing east.

Priestess: Thou that art I, and I that art thou, Thou spirit of All and None, Mystery of Mysteries, thou ineffable and unnameable that are all that I am, Guide and uphold me in the darkness of night, with the light of the moon’s journey and the fire of the stars shining through each spirit’s angel, the brilliance of the soul as the sun’s fire within. Secret are the ways of the stars.

Music. With deacons following, the Priestess circumambulates the four altars through the center in two crossed circles, and returns to the center.

She takes the censor. The Deacons bring her the candle from the Southern altar and the incense from the Eastern altar. She lights the censer and adores, then replaces it on the table, removing the topmost (gold) veil.

She takes the bowl. The Deacons bring her the salt from the Northern altar and the cup of water from the Western altar. She sprinkles salt and pours water in the bowl, adores, and replaces it upon the table, removing the topmost (silver) veil. She seats herself upon the center with cup in right hand and paten in left, facing east.

Priestess: Raphael, Priest and King, Eastern Guardian, enter with the sun’s rising… Uriel, I beseech thee, in the name of …Open the Gate!

Uriel: As you Will, Abiding One.

He opens the Tomb. Raphael rises and one deacon takes the topmost (yellow) veil from Uriel and replaces it upon him. The other deacon hands him the staff. He moves to stand in the East. All give the hailing sign.

Priestess and congregation draw the invoking triangle of Air and vibrate: IAO

Raphael draws the Unicursal upon the congregation and vibrates: YHVH He stands facing the center.

Priestess: Michael, Priest and King, Southern Guardian, enter with the sun’s rising… Uriel, I beseech thee, in the name of …Open the Gate!

Uriel: As you Will, Abiding One.

He opens the Tomb. Michael rises and one deacon takes the topmost (red) veil from Uriel and replaces it upon him. The other deacon hands him the sword. He moves to stand in the South. All give the hailing sign.

Priestess and congregation draw the invoking triangle of Fire and vibrate: IAO

Michael draws the unicursal upon the congregation and vibrates: ELOHIM

Priestess: Gabriel, Priest and King, Western Guardian, enter with the sun’s rising… Uriel, I beseech thee, in the name of …Open the Gate!

Uriel: As you Will, Abiding One.

He opens the Tomb. Gabriel rises and one deacon takes the topmost (blue) veil from Uriel and replaces it upon him. The other deacon hands him the staff. He moves to stand in the West. All give the hailing sign.

Priestess and congregation draw the invoking triangle of Water and vibrate: IAO

Gabriel draws the Unicursal upon the congregation and vibrates: SHADDAI He stands facing the center.

Uriel closes the tomb.

The Priestess turns to face Uriel.

Priestess: Uriel, Priest and King, Guardian of the Gate of Earth in the North, join us!

Priestess and congregation draw the invoking triangle of Earth and vibrate: IAO

Uriel turns and draws the unicursal upon the congregation, vibrating: ADONAI He turns to face the center.

Consecration of the Priestess

Raphael: Dost thou aspire to the throne of the Sun?

Priestess: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Raphael moves to stand before her, and hands his staff to a deacon. He takes the feather and incense and approaches the Priestess. Dipping the feather in the incense, he makes five crosses on the Priestess, forehead, shoulders, thighs.

Raphael: Be thou consecrated with the element of Air.

He takes the staff and draws the Unicursal over the Priestess.

Raphael: YHVH

He takes the staff and holds it before the Priestess, who kisses it seven times. On the seventh kiss, he falls to his knees and adores, dropping the staff. The deacons assist him up and return his staff, and guide him to the East, where he stands at guard.

The deacons take the altar and turn the Priestess to face the South.

Michael: Dost thou aspire to the throne of the Sun?

Priestess: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Michael moves to stand before her, and hands his sword to a deacon. He takes the candles and makes five crosses on the Priestess, forehead, shoulders, thighs.

Michael: Be thou consecrated with the element of Fire.

He takes the sword and draws a unicursal over the Priestess.

Michael: ELOHIM

He takes the sword to hold it before the Priestess, who kisses it seven times. On the seventh kiss, he falls to his knees and adores, dropping the sword. The deacons assist him up and return his sword, and guide him to the South, where he stands at guard.

The deacons take the altar and turn the Priestess to face the West.

Gabriel: Dost thou aspire to the throne of the Sun?

Gabriel moves to stand before her, and hands his staff to a deacon. He takes the cup and makes five crosses on the Priestess, forehead, shoulders, thighs.

Gabriel: Be thou consecrated with the element of Water.

He takes the staff and draws the Unicursal over the Priestess.

Gabriel: SHADDAI

He takes the staff to hold it before the Priestess, who kisses it seven times. On the seventh kiss, he falls to his knees and adores, dropping the staff. The deacons assist him up and return his staff, and guide him to the West, where he stands at guard.

The deacons take the altar and turn the Priestess to face the North.

Uriel: Dost thou aspire to the throne of the Sun?

Priestess: I am worthy, should thou consecrate me.

Uriel moves to stand before her, and hands his sword to a deacon. He takes the dish of salt and makes five crosses on the Priestess, forehead, shoulders, thighs.

Uriel: Be thou consecrated with the element of Earth.

He takes the sword and draws the unicursal over the Priestess.

Uriel: ADONAI

He takes the sword to hold it before the Priestess, who kisses it seven times. On the seventh kiss, he begins to fall to his knees, stops suddenly, then rises again, holding his sword, and bows regally.

Uriel: Thou will return to me in thy time. Seek not to overwhelm the Opener of Gates.

The deacons respectfully guide him to the North, where he stands at guard.

The Consecration of the Bread and Wine

The deacons take the altar and turn the Priestess to face the East.

Raphael hands his staff to one deacon and advances to kneel before her. He takes the paten and raises it. He draws the glyph of Air over it.

Raphael: Be this bread the essence of and form of the gods.

He returns the paten to the Priestess and takes the cup from the Priestess. He raises the cup and draws the glyph of Air over it.

Raphael: Be the wine the blood and spirit of the gods.

He returns the cup to the Priestess and rises, taking his staff. He draws the glyph of Air three times over Priestess, paten and cup.

Raphael: Thus is the covenant of resurrection and transformation in the name of IAO.

He Turns and makes the glyph of Air with his staff upon the congregation four times as he circumnavigates the altar. He returns to kneel to at the front corner of the altar at the right hand of the Priestess, head bowed.

Michael hands his sword to one deacon and advances to kneel before the Priestess. He takes the paten and raises it and draws the glyph of Fire over it.

Michael: Be this bread the essence of and form of the gods.

He returns the paten to the Priestess and takes the cup. He raises the cup and draws the glyph of Fire over it.

Michael: Be the wine the blood and spirit of the gods.

He returns the cup to the Priestess and rises, taking his sword. He draws the glyph of Fire three times over Priestess, paten and cup.

Michael: Thus is the covenant of resurrection and transformation in the name of IAO.

He Turns and makes the glyph of Fire with his staff upon the congregation four times as he circumnavigates the altar. He returns to kneel at the corner of the altar behind the Priestess and to her right, head bowed.

He returns the paten to the Priestess and takes the cup. He raises the cup and draws the glyph of Water over it.

He returns the cup to the Priestess and rises, taking his staff. He draws the glyph of Water three times over Priestess, paten and cup.

He returns the cup to the Priestess and rises, taking his staff. He draws the glyph of Earth three times over Priestess, paten and cup.

Uriel: Thus is the covenant of resurrection and transformation in the name of IAO.

He Turns and makes the glyph of Earth with his sword upon the congregation four times as he circumnavigates the altar. He returns to stand before the Priestess. All of the other archangels rise and stand around the altar, surrounding the Priestess. She offers the paten and cup to Uriel. He takes the host and raises it over the cup as the bell strikes.

All: QADOSH QADOSH QADOSH IAO

Uriel returns the cup to the Priestess. The other three gently place the end of their staff or sword upon his shoulders. He breaks a small portion of the host and, joining hands with the Priestess on the cup and with the piece, depresses it into the cup.

All: (whispered) ARARITA

All move back from the Priestess and turn to face the congregation in their respective directions. Together, the four draw the unicursal upon the congregation.

Uriel: Do what you will shall be the whole of the law.

Congregation: Love is the law, love under will.

The four turn back to the Priestess, who offers the paten and cup. All four take a Host, turn and show it to the congregation, and turn back to face the Priestess.

The deacons and congregation draw a unicursal in the air.

Congregation: In thy mouth be the essence of resurrection and life!

The Priest-Archangels consume the Host. The Priestess offers the cup to Uriel, who takes it and, turning, holds it up to the congregation.

Congregation: In thy mouth be the essence of the joy of the spirit!

Uriel drinks, hands the cup to Gabriel, who drinks and passes it on to Michael, etc., Raphael draining the cup and handing it back to Uriel.

Uriel takes the soaked piece of Host from the cup and gently feeds it to the Priestess.

Uriel: Thou art the essence of the earth and the stars.

Each of the Priest-Archangels bows to the Priestess and returns to face outward at their respective altars.

Uriel turns to the congregation and holds his sword upwards.

Uriel: The Gate is open for all that would enter and partake.

The congregation enters under the sword of Uriel and each completes a circuit of the altars, adoring at each and, if wished, consecrating individually with the elements at each altar before standing before the Priestess and receiving communion.

Upon leaving, each congregant spirals about the altar and exits through the East, past Raphael.

When the last congregant has communed, Uriel lowers his sword and advances to the Priestess, and kneels.

Uriel: Shall the Gate be closed?

The Priestess nods silently, and as Uriel returns to the North, she places the paten and cup beside her. She stands, facing east. The deacons take the two veils from the middle altars and replace them upon her. She claps her hands eleven times (in the battery of 3-5-3).

Raphael moves to the South and is joined by Michael, and then Gabriel proceeding to the North, the deacons following. All three enter again into the tomb and kneel. Uriel lowers his sword and steps behind the Tomb in front of them, bowing his head but remaining upright. The Tomb is closed by the deacons, this time with Uriel behind the Gate with the others.

All leave the temple.
